The short answer: YouTube doesn't offer a switch to turn off Shorts. On YouTube's website, HUSH's Calm modes hide Shorts, comments and suggestions, each one on or off whenever you like.
Why hide Shorts?
Shorts are built to keep you swiping. If you open YouTube for one video and look up twenty minutes later, Calm modes are for you. They also make YouTube feel calmer for kids, students and anyone trying to focus.
What YouTube offers
In the YouTube app you can tap "Show fewer Shorts" or "Not interested", but Shorts come back. There's no setting to remove them for good.
Step by step with HUSH
- Get HUSH and switch it on in Settings › Apps › Safari › Extensions.
- Open HUSH, go to Settings and find the Calm section.
- Switch on Hide YouTube Shorts, and if you like, Hide YouTube comments, Hide YouTube suggestions or Hide Instagram Reels.
- Optional: turn on On a schedule, so Calm only runs during the hours and days you pick, like a school or work day.
- Open YouTube in Safari or the HUSH browser. Just the videos you chose.
